“A full style of Vouvray the 2018 La Butte de Tresor has fine clarity of fruit flavors, including apple and pineapple. It’s nicely structured with a grippy yet chalky texture and firm acidity pulsing through the wine, leading into a tangy and near-as-dammit dry conclusion with fine sinew. I’d love a little more concentration and length plus a plate of Mexican food with this wine – it screams for cilantro.” Rebecca Gibb for Vinous, 89 Points
Domaine Sylvain Gaudron has around 70 acres of Chenin Blanc vines, most of which average 30 years of age, and all of them planted in flinty clay over the calcareous limestone subsoil, tuffeau, that defines the appellation.
Fourth generation Gilles Gaudron took over the family domaine in 1993. Comprising of 50 separate, small parcels of vineyards, the estate is planted on limestone-clay soils spread over 27 hectares with closely spaced goblet-pruned vines, the majority of which are older than 30 years of age and are hand harvested. Still aided by his father Sylvain, Gilles produces top quality, traditional Vouvrays with intense pure fruit characters and striking terroir expression. The atmospheric, naturally temperature-regulated cellars date back over 700 years and include 1,000 metres of tuffeau galleries. Fermentation is long and slow with natural yeasts.
